Watermark Update: 5/10/2017

Update 5/10/2017

You can remove the watermark from your videos. Just go to preferences in the Plays.tv client.

Watermark Removal

If you disable watermarks, new videos you record will not have the watermark. We are unable to update old videos that have already been recorded.

Thanks for letting us know how important this issue is to you.

Update 5/5/2017

In our next release, you will have the option to remove the water mark completely through preferences in the client. We want you to know we’ve heard your feedback and trying to make these changes as quickly as possible. Here is more history for you:

Two days ago, we released a new version of the Plays.tv client.  Part of that release included adding watermarks to your Plays.tv videos when you upload. We got a lot of feedback and we want you to know we are listening and reacting as quickly as we can.

Why did we add the watermark?

  • We saw thousands of examples of Plays.tv content shared on other platforms ( Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, etc ) without the creators’ permission
  • In many cases our users let us know about Plays.tv clips being used on other sites with no link to the source
  • Including our brand helps us spread the word. It lets people know they can create and see more clips just like the one they watched.

We learned a lot from this release and your feedback.

  • The watermark was too big.  When we saw it live, it was clear to us we could make it smaller.  The new version addresses that.
  • The username takes up too much space.  We included it thinking our users would like the attribution.  You’ve told us you prefer it to not be there and we removed it.
  • The watermark stood out too much.  We’ve toned down the opacity significantly.

Athens Online: We did it UGA!

Last month, we worked with the wonderful folks from Esports at University of Georgia. The team at Esports at UGA created and organized a local LAN called Athens Online. The LAN featured tournaments for CS:GO, League of Legends, and Overwatch.

Athens Online had over $10,000 in prizing — including some fantastic prizes sponsored by Plays.tv.

In addition to the festivities onsite, we ran a video submission contest using #AthensOnline. You can see all of the awesome submissions here.

The winners scored some big prizes, like this gigantic Thresh statue:

Here were our big winners:

League of Legends:

CS:GO

Overwatch:

Of course, pulling off a large-scale event was no easy task. There are definitely a lot of hurdles and challenges to overcome when creating and managing a large tournament.

Annie Lian, Esports at UGA’s co-founder, had this to say about the process: “In order to host a successful event of any type and/or scale, communication, adaptation, and flexibility are the most important attributes that the leaders and staff must have.”

Events like Athens Online are helping expand the reach of collegiate esports.

“I believe collegiate esports is an excellent foundation that enables young gamers to build a strong work ethic and learn how to excel in a team environment. More and more schools are creating esports programs, and this increase will only continue as the legitimacy of esports becomes more well known and understood.” Brendon Ramdeholl External PR Officer of Esports at UGA

We were happy to be a part of Esports at UGA’s incredible Athens Online event and hope to work together again in the future!

Introducing League Of Legends Emojis

It started as just a post on Reddit. The post was a collection of whimsical League of Legends inspired thinking faces.  The Plays.tv team LOVED these LoL thinking emojis so much that we had to find the person behind them. We thought having awesome LoL emojis would be a great addition to our site.

So, we contacted Helmi Kinnunen ( @Nemulaattori ), the creator of the LoL thinking emojis. She is a digital artist from Finland, who is passionate about video games, and is awesome to work with. You can find more of Helmi’s incredible artwork on her website.

We’re excited to announce that our first project together has just launched! Helmi has created several custom League of Legends icons which can be used in reactions and comments. Here’s how they look on our website:

Now you can react to your favorite videos with iconic League of Legends champions!

Our goal is to have one for every champ and to find more ways to incorporate these fantastic emojis into Plays.tv.  Let us know what you think!
